That smell in the air would be the fresh cut grass. That sound would be the pop of the ball in a mitt. This can only mean one thing, Spring Training and the return of the subject scientific poll. This weeks poll, best to worst fielding shortstops, and that whining you hear(did it ever end!!!!) is the Yankee fans, more specifically the NY Post. Why are they whining? Oh because someone by the name of DEREK JETER is ranked the worst fielding shortstop and ALEX RODRIGUEZ is second best. Wait, how can that be? A-Rod plays third right. Well the scourge of the NYC use to play short before graciously(never thought I 'd put gracious and A-Rod together) sliding over to third. The study takes a look at 2002-2005. Did I mean yet how dumb this poll is. A-Rod only played short for 2 of those years before he joined the Yanks. The top 2 on the list Clint Barmes, COL and Jason Bartlett, TB(anyone who watched the Twinkies knows this is a farce). Looking only at the the stats over those 4 years at MLB level you'll see how biased this study was. Stats thanks to The Baseball Cube.

Player Games Errors

Barmes 113 20
Bartlett 82 7
A-Rod 320 18
Jeter 589 56

Game totals are for all games played while listed as a shortstop not just starting at short.

While I do believe that Jeter is one of the all time most overrated shortstops, I don't believe this study shows it very well. A better study would have been of the players over common years at the same position. But stats don't tell it all. Three words for you:

Rawlings Gold Glove

Anyone familiar with this award knows it is the biggest joke award in all of sports, just ask Rafael Palmeiro. Jeter is more a player of situation than of greatness. You could have put almost ANY shortstop on the Yankee teams he's been on and they would have still won 3 Gold Gloves and 4 World Series rings. The Gold Glove award has nothing to do with defense. Jeter won those awards because of being a Yankee and to his great hitting. A-Rod on the other hand has always been a great all-around player, with exception of 06 season in which he couldn't field. The New Yorkers who are whining aren't being objective. They always liked Jeter because he's a nice guy, and hated A-Rod because he's been, to put it nicely, a pompous jerk and an arrogant, overpaid baby. Which is why, we get stupid unprovable studies like this one released every year that get people's panties in a bunch.

But they definitely make for fun chatter and still leave room for this:

The Yankees suck! Think I'm wrong. Prove it!

William Lacy Clay obviously wanted(and now probably deserves) an autograph. The star-struck congressmen soft balled the first question and then followed up with most relevant question of the day.........
"A colleague of mine, Mr. Capuano of Massachusetts, wants to know what uniform you're going to wear to the Hall of Fame?" Really that's the best you could do?

3 Rep Virginia Foxx started off her allotted times correctly stating that this was a waste of everyone's time(and taxpayers money) but then digressed.

4 Rep Elijah Cummings wasn't buying anything Clemens said.

5 Rep Tom Davis wasn't buying anything McNamee said.

6 Not only does Congress not know the meaning of "is", now they have to learn the meaning of "It is what it is".

7 Rep Dan Burton's list of McNamee quotes and then asked McNamee each time if he lied. McNamee's answer's yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and partial lie. Didn't know you could do that.

8 Nanny-gate and no this not about the normal nanny state laws passed in Congress.

9 Palpable mass. Never thought that the Rockets massive buttocks would be the most talked about you know what in Washington.

10 Body language. Clemens sat up straight looked attentive and, for the most part, directly at everyone asked him question. McNamee, on the other hand, spoke and looked like he had been a bad boy. Didn't make eye contact, slouched over, and extremely nervous.

Overall, it was a terrible day for McNamee, a bad day for the Mitchell Report and an OK day for Clemens. McNamee looked like a villain, The Mitchell Report an unknowing accomplice and Clemens came off looking like he was the most trustworthy of the shady bunch.

Prediction

1 The Rocket will end up in the Hall of Fame, mostly likely on the second ballot, and he'll probably go as a Yankee. Sorry King.

2 McNamee and Clemens will both be charged with perjury. McNamee on the steroid lies and Clemens for his comments about the Mitchell Report not trying very hard to contact him.

The best news all day: Pitchers and Catchers report as early as Thursday and Hopefully we can move on.

Biofuel Laws of Unintended Consequences

So I came across this article from CNN about Biofuels and their unintended consequences. Mainly that they raise the costs of, well, let's let the U.N. tell us how it is.

Speaking at a regional forum on bioenergy, Regan Suzuki of the
U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization acknowledged that biofuels are
better for the environment than fossil fuels and boost energy security
for many countries.

OK that's sounds right. Dislocate your shoulder and admit no fault, it's for the greater good. Let's sneak that problem in... right now.

However, she said those benefits must be
weighed against the pitfalls -- many of which are just now emerging as countries convert millions of acres to palm oil, sugar cane and other
crops used to make biofuels.

"Biofuels have become a flash point through which a wide range of
social and environmental issues are currently being played out in the
media," Suzuki told delegates at the forum, sponsored by the U.N. and
the Thai government.

Why is it that when opponents of global warming climate change said that we needed more time and studies, they were called names and run out of building? It's seems that they right in their non haste.

But in recent months, scientists, private agencies and even the British
government have said biofuels could do more harm than good. Rather than
protecting the environment, they say energy crops destroy natural forests that actually store carbon and thus are a key tool in the fight
to reduce global warming.

THE OZONE IS FAILING! IT"S GETTING TO HOT!! WE"RE GOING TO DIE!!! SAVE THE PLANET!!!! BIOFUELS ARE THE WAY TO SALVATION!!!!! ARGHHH!!!!!! What? what's that? quiet it down people. Biofuels are destroying the planet and certain capitalist pigs are getting rich of this crisis. What OUTRAGE!!! How can this be?

Foremost among the concerns is increased competition for agricultural
land, which Suzuki warned has already caused a rise in corn prices in
the United States and Mexico and could lead to food shortages in developing countries.

Isn't it amazing, that despite the evidence they site in their own study, they blame the rising cost of corn in the US and Mexico on land grabbers. Isn't it more like that it could be the policies that were in acted in the name of children and the poor? Look no one wants to destroy the planet or keep people hungry, but when not all facts are looked at completely, you end up in situations of unintended consequence.

Oh and by the way they are hitting the US in otherways as well. Just check the cost of your eggs, milk and cheese next time your at the market.

Well another superstar has left the Twin Cities and this time people actually care! Didn't see that comin'. We continually watch them go. KG, David Ortiz(granted he wasn't a star yet), Randy "Straight Cash Homie" Moss, and who could forget Jesse "The Body Mind" Ventura. Nobody should be shocked. What does amaze me is to how many people are trying to blame this trade on the Pohlads, Terry Ryan, Bill Smith, small market or Johan Santana. The truth is no one is to blame. Trades are part of the game and one of the things that makes baseball so interesting because of the way it effects everything the organization does for years to come. Let's flesh this out a little to see how this will affect the Twinks in 2008 and beyond.

1 Did the Twinkies really try to sign Johan and did Johan really want to stay a Twin?

I honestly believe, for once, that Major League Baseball's richest owner Carl Pohlad actually gave the ok to spend money and try to build a winner after Johan called the organization on the carpet " because it won't do what it takes to win a title". Look at what the Twins have done in this off season. They traded a top flight prospect in P Matt Garza, something the Twins never do, SS Jason Bartlett and minor league P Eduardo Morlan for another top flight prospect in OF Delmon Young, minor league OF Jason Pridie(whom the Twins drafted the year before in the Rule 5 draft) and SS Brendan Harris. They then signed1B Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer to long term contracts. And to further make the point that the money was on the table, everyone seems to believe that the Twins offered Johan a 5 year 100 million dollar contract and that he rejected it because he wanted a 6th or 7th year. Santana obviously didn't want to be a Twin anymore and he forced their hand. I can't blame the Twins for not going for a 6 or 7 year contract for Pitcher given the history.(see Kevin Brown, Denny Naegle, Mike Hampton, BJ Ryan and AJ Burnett) With best friend Carlos Silva and Torii Hunter leaving for ridiculous money, Santana had to feel that the Twins would never pony up any money. I would have liked to see the Twins try a 6 or 7 year deal if it was set up like this:

5 years 100 mil
6th year option kicks in at x wins, y E.R.A or z Strikeouts in first 2 seasons at 22 mil
7th year option same as 6th but afte 4 years 25 mil

I doubt that he would have taken this kind of deal but I would have liked to seen it offered.

2 Did the Twins get the best deal?

The answer is NOOOOOOO! From a pure baseball standpoint how do you give up the best pitcher in the game for only 1 MLB ready player in OF Gomez, who I actually think is going to be a stud, and 3 pitchers, 2 of whom are coming off injury in Humber and Guerra. Not only that you didn't address your team and minors league systems greatest need, 3B, which you've proven you can't draft or develop, you just added to your greatest strength, young pitching, which you've proven you can draft and develop. The Twins, with exception of Corey Koskie for a spilt second, haven't had a great third baseman since the Rat in 89 and there isn't anyone ready to take over until well after 2010 when the new stadium comes. And how many Pitchers are you going to carry on your 25 man roster, 15. The spring training battle will be great but unfortunate as the Twinks will still be punchless in too many areas. Here's the 2008 pitcher's battling for at most 2 or 3 spots(Lirano, Baker and Bonser as the 3 for sure starters and the bullpen still intact): Perkins, Slowey, Blackburn, Duensing, Humber, Mulvaney.
Here's your battle for 3rd: Buscher, Lamb, Harris, Punto. Boy, doesn't sound like alot of runs!

I wish now that they's turn around and trade someone here for a viable 3rd base option. What happened to Matt Moses anyways?

Ahhh and to think all of this will be sorted out, beginning in 2 weeks when Pitchers and Catchers report. Well at least for 08. Twins look like they will still be in a world of hurt in key position when the new stadium opens

Gotta love America's Favorite Pasttime!!!!
